I co-hosted a "baby sprinkle" for my sister at my house a few weeks ago. It was so fun and I had a blast creating all the DIY party details.

Small Move, Big Difference
About a year or so ago my husband's grandmother offered us an old wooden desk that had been painted green years (and years) ago. I accepted without technically consulting with my better half but I figured it was his grandmother so he wouldn't mind.
We got it home and tried it in just about every room in our house with no luck. It just didn't look right and was rather small to be used as an actual desk. Eventually, we decided that it would be best if we sanded it down and painted it white or black then it would have to work somewhere.
Months went on as it sat in my office (still green) and filled with my jewelry which also didn't have a real home... then we moved. We've now been in our new house for about 2 months. Earlier this week I was rearranging and organizing things in my office and started to feel bad for gram's desk which was, yet again, in my purple-ish office. I moved it into the hallway (we didn't have a hallway in our previous house) so I could finish unloading boxes and moving things around.
Once it was in the hallway I really liked it there! The space that I placed it in was the perfect size for it and we intend on painting the walls a dark charcoal grey color so I think the green will look really nice against it.
After the desk ended up in the hallway I started looking for things to put on it, in it, and around it. Everything was taken from a box that hadn't been fully unpacked or a corner that was just a temporary place anyway.
A. White frame holding a Dove chocolate wrapper that reads, Exercise your heart today, that my husbands great-grandmother gave me the 1st time I met her and sadly the last time before she passed. (It kind of feels like a personal message from her to me.) B. Painting of Steve Zissou (Bill Murray) from The Life Aquatic, one of his all-time favorite movies painted by a good friend of his. C. Statue my mother brought for me from Punta Cana about 10 years ago. D. Card box from our wedding. E. Photo of us taken by a photobooth at Chuck-E-Cheese from my nephew's 3rd birthday. F. Porcelain cat from Benihana that a tropical drink came in on our first date. G. A large vase the hubs made in a pottery class in high school (it just happens to be green+blue)
We also have A LOT of candles so it will be the perfect place to store them until they are needed. Now we just need to fix the broken chain (far left of the image) and paint the walls!
I love when I get so much enjoyment out of something that didn't cost a thing.

• We attended Summer Safari 2011 (which is an event I design every year) at the Pgh Zoo.

• Mom invited us to Kennywood where we all bought matching rhinestone glasses, nephew discovered a love for the whip, my sister+I realized we kind of do look related, and mom laughed really REALLY hard at this picture.
• Took my mom, sister, and nephew to hang out with an african elephant.
• Found out the 4 year old nephew is freakishly good at archery.
• Assisted the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium and the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores release 2 rehabilitated loggerhead sea turtles (LC + Little Yinzer) into the Gulf Stream.

My mom, sister, nephew, and I recently took a short trip to Chicago, IL for my neph's 4th birthday. He could not get Chicago to come out of his mouth right, so he always said "Chi-congo" (which was seriously like the cutest thing ever).
Chicago was fun.
I'm not sure I ever would have set out to take a trip there but we definitely enjoyed it.

The last Friday evening in July the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium holds their annual Summer Safari event. It's an over 21 event with live entertainment, beverage stations, and specialty dishes from lots of restaurants from all over the Pittsburgh area (including Capital Grille, Ibiza, Joe's Crab Shack, Six Penn Kitchen, etc). All the animals are out on exhibit for this event and it's a really good time (rain or shine). Every year since I've been with the zoo it has been my job to create all the print materials and signage. This year the committee chose Amur Leopards as the theme, fun right?

Regular tickets are $80 per person and includes vouchers for drinks and all your food. VIP tickets are $125, visit the website for more info. All proceeds go towards the Pittsburgh Zoo and their conservation efforts. Tickets go on sale June 13. Appropriate dress for this event is "fashionable and stylish with comfortable shoes" - basically no jeans since it is essentially a large scale cocktail/dinner party.

My husband and I just celebrated our ONE YEAR wedding anniversary over this past weekend. We knew we wanted to go somewhere but he surprised me with a trip to Miami! We stayed at the JW Marriott Marquis which just opened it's doors only a few months ago. It was a STUNNING hotel and a really great experience. We spent our time exploring Miami, Key Largo, and Islamorada and eating fabulous food. Seriously, we had nothing that we did not LOVE!

The Life Aquatic • Teaser
We threw a surprise "themed" birthday dinner for my husband earlier this month. You are never too old for these things! It was designed after his favorite movie "The Life Aquatic." When I have some time I will post more photos and details!

Breakfast Tray Upgrade
This is what happens when I find myself at home with nothing better to do.

I had neglected to actually "create" anything for over a month. And by "create" I really mean getting to use my mod podge! I found this tray that was rather boring and turned into something more fun {more fun for myself anyway}.
I used a combination of 3 different papers that had coordinating colors on this piece. I had been saving the paper for a project I was planning for my dining room. I figured that since we are moving I will probably change the colors in my dining room anyway... probably... most likely...{and it definitely doesn't match my kitchen}.
Overall, I'm really pleased with how it turned out and I already have a phase 2 in the works for it!
